“Ponceau” 2023 is a blend of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. These grape varieties, grown on south-facing clay-granite soils, express their full maturity. Merlot brings its characteristic roundness to this wine, which is aged for 18 months in barrels and amphorae, giving it remarkable depth and density. The very open nose reveals lovely black fruits enriched with a beautiful smoky component that lingers on the palate. Generous, it has powdery tannins that provide structure without harshness, leading to a complex finish, all balanced by a persistent freshness.
Jean-Baptiste Hardy is a rising star in the Muscadet-Sèvre-et-Maine appellation, bringing fresh energy to the region. Trained with Jean Marc Roulot & Domaine Leflaive, and working in vineyards all around the world including Patagonia (Bodega Chacra), California (Domaine de la Côte) and New Zealand (Fromm Winery), Jean-Baptiste took over his family estate (Domaine de la Grange) in 2018 located in Mouzillon in Muscadet-Sèvre-et-Maine.
Jean-Baptiste has now converted 8.5 hectares of the family vineyards to Biodynamic culture, all planted with only the local varieties – Melon de Bourgogne, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and old Merlot. The Melon de Bourgogne vines are only from massale selection, planted in the 1950s and 1960s on typical Muscadet terroir: complex soils of gabbros (volcanic soils and fragmented granite), silica, and clay.
